Translation certification and authentication

Translation certification is the procedure through which a translator takes an oath that the translation he/she performed is accurate and faithful to the original. This procedure takes place before the Court Clerk, or a Notary Public, who confirms the truthfulness of the translator’s statement.

Authentication is the procedure through which the legal capacity of the person signing below a document and the authenticity of his/her signature are certified.

The authentication of a translation is the procedure through which the Court Clerk’s, or the Notary Public’s signature on the affidavit of the translated document is attested. It is required, if the document must be used in a foreign country.

Conversely, if the document is translated from a foreign language into Italian for legal use in Italy, certification only is required. Authentication takes place at the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Nota bene: the signature attestation of the person signing the original document in Italy must take place at Court, or Prefecture, depending on the Public Body issuing it.

Apostille is the authentication procedure provided for the signatory countries of the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961.
